The Rotary Club of Calverley was founded on the 14th
February 1985 and is part of Rotary International. The Club meets
weekly for dinner and undertakes personal service in the community as
well as fundraising to enable it to support worthwhile projects both
locally and in the wider community. The Club has 26 members and our
Mother Club was the Rotary Club of Pudsey (closed June 2008)
We have a wide variety of speakers with a varied program
and we have been involved with the Calverley Millennium Way since its
conception. More details of this can be found on the site.
RI is a worldwide association of business and
professional men and women dedicated to high ethical standards in
business; the ideal of service in personal, business and community life
and the advancement of international understanding and world peace.
FUNDRAISING
During the Rotary Year we have a number of fund raising
events including our Annual Golf Tournament, Casino Night, Test Match
Parking and the Craft Fair in
September at the Pudsey Leisure Centre.
LOCAL COMMUNITY SERVICE
Members of the Club provided "hands on" assistance
throughout the year. We provide the BBQ at the Annual Garden Party at
the Calverley Cheshire Home, involved with the local Pudsey Gateway Club
and their “Kids Day Out” Event, and support the Annual Millennium Walk
around Calverley. Money raised from this event goes to the four
residential homes.
Every Christmas Day we have organised the provision of
Christmas Lunches along with other organisations for those people who
are living at home and just like to see a welcoming face on Christmas
Morning.
CHARITABLE DONATIONS
The Club's principal donation during the year 2007 – 2008
was £1000.00 to The Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
In addition we have made donations to other charities and
individuals including - Caring for Life, Pudsey Gateway Club, Calverley
United Junior AFC, Hope & Homes for Children, Brookleigh House and
Champion House Bus Appeal.
INTERNATIONAL
Rotary is a worldwide organisation with clubs in over 160
countries. The Rotary Foundation, which is supported by Rotary Clubs
and Rotarians worldwide, makes grants to humanitarian projects which are
supported by local Rotarians. We have just installed in Uganda a
borehole with the assistance of The Rotary Club of Pudsey, Rotary
District 1040, 2 local churches and Rotary International.
Every year we collect spectacles for Vision Aid
International and we pride ourselves on probably collecting more as an
individual club than any others in the UK.
FOUNDATION
Rotary Foundation has been instrumental in initiating a
worldwide programme to eliminate polio and has contributed over £250
million, more than 20% of the cost of the programme. Worldwide
incidence of Polio has been reduced from over 400,000 cases annually to
less than 500. Rotary International is currently raising the
£55,000.000 needed to achieve final elimination.
