ARGENTINA - My travels part two 15.09.09

Our own member David Cavill gave us the second part of his two part illustrated talk about his travels with his wife Tina through the length of Argentina.

David spoke about the history of the country and the influence people had on the development before showing us pictures of the extremity of the countryside and the diversity. From the extreme temperatures they had from the south to the north of the country

Plaque at Caring for Life unveiled

In November 2008 The Rotary Club of Calverley planted of an orchard of apple trees at the Caring for Life Farm in Cookridge. A plaque commemorating the orchard was unveiled and was was built into a dry stone wall which was built at a previous open day at Caring for Life by our own members. The stone plaque was provided and installed by White Rose Masons which is a company owned by one of our members Tim Mahony.

My job talk - Undertakers

One of the newest members of the Rotary Club of Calverley, Tim Mahony who is a Director of Mahony & Ward and Sons, gave us his job talk on his life as an undertaker. Tim was working some days even before he left school for his father so it was natural that he should go in to the family business. He started his talk on how undertaker came around and that originally they were just joiners in the locality and gradually stated to organise funerals, transport, church services and virtually everything that is now accepted as life of funeral director. He also explained about how he trained to be an embalmer and also about coffin styles including a new 'natural' coffin made from wool that is woven into cloth again in our locality.

 

Our Hardy Members go on "T'elements weekend"

The weekend of the 2nd / 3rd OCTOBER 2009 the "hardy and super fit members of our club" embarked on their annual Elements Weekend to the Lake District.

No sleeping under canvas for these intrepid explorers they stay in the luxury of a hotel and do some cycling and some walking but most exercise is in the evenings!
